A vital part of the Committee’s mandate is to examine reports submitted by States on the child rights situation in their country.

This reporting procedure provides a framework for dialogue between the Committee and States Parties, allowing the Committee to monitor implementation of the charter and to agree on solutions to difficulties co-peratively with the State concerned.

States are supposed to submit an initial report within two years of ratification of the Children’s Charter and every three years after that.

The reporting process:

1. State Party submits report to the Committee
2. Rapporteur appointed from amongst Committee members
3. Civil society report submitted to the Committee
4. Pre-Session Working Group held where the Committee identifies issues for discussion with the State Party
5. Plenary Session (public) held where the Committee discusses the report with the State Party
6. The Committee produces Concluding Observations and Recommendations which should be implemented by the State Party.
